My best friend and I decided there was no better way to celebrate the big 4-0 than a trip to the Windy City. Chicago is easily one of my favorite places on earth, and since she had never been, it was the perfect opportunity to show her exactly what she’s been missing.

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, hidden history, and world-class flavor. But let’s be real: when you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, you don’t want to spend your time scrolling through reviews or getting lost on the CTA. You want a vibe.

Here are a few of my personal "must-experience" favorites to give you a taste of the city. To see how to fit these into a perfect, stress-free weekend, you can grab my Full 3-Day Chicago Itinerary at the end of this post!

1. The Iconic Sightseeing

  • Lake Shore Drive: Don't just "travel"—take the scenic route. The views of the skyline against the lake are unmatched, especially on the way to a sunset dinner.

  • The Magnificent Mile & Millennium Park: You have to do the classics. Walk the Mile for the shopping, then head to the park to see your reflection in "The Bean."

  • Navy Pier: It’s a classic for a reason. Grab a cocktail and take in the lake breeze.

2. A Deep Dive into the Food Scene

If you aren't eating well in Chicago, you aren't doing it right.

  • Pequod’s Pizza: Forget the tourist traps. We went for the caramelized crust that locals love.

  • Greek Islands: Located in the heart of West Loop’s Greektown, the flaming Saganaki is a requirement.

  • Bien Mesabe: For some of the most authentic Venezuelan flavors you'll find outside of Caracas.

3. Speakeasies & High-End Nightlife

  • Three Dots and a Dash: Tucked away in a secret alleyway, this tropical speakeasy feels like a total escape.

  • London House: For the absolute best rooftop views of the Chicago River—perfect for that birthday or anniversary toast.

  • The Green Mill: Step back in time to a jazz club for that smooth rhythmic sound.

4. The "Must-Dos"

  • The Architecture Cruise: If you only do one thing, make it this. Seeing the city from the river provides a perspective you just can't get on foot.

  • Drunken Shakespeare: It’s hilarious, interactive, and the perfect high-energy addition to a girls' trip.
